Painting Questions Answered

Straight answers to the questions people ask most about house painting in Hobart and about how this referral service works. If your question is not here, send it with your quote request and the painter can answer it when they contact you.

Are you a painting company?

No. Painters Hobart is an independent quote service. We pass your enquiry to a local Hobart painting business, which contacts you directly to arrange a quote. We do not carry out painting work, set prices or supervise jobs, so any agreement is between you and the painter.

How does the referral work?

You fill in a short form, we pass your request to a local Hobart painting business and that painter contacts you within one business day to arrange a quote. From then on you deal with the painter directly. You can compare their quote with others and are never obliged to go ahead. See how it works.

Does it cost anything to use this site?

No. Sending a request is free. Painting businesses may pay us for referrals or advertising, which is how the site is funded. The painter sets their own prices and you pay them directly if you decide to go ahead. You are never obliged to accept the quote you receive.

How much does house painting cost in Hobart?

As of September 2026, a published Hobart painting cost guide puts a single room at $270 to $720, a three-bedroom interior at $2,700 to $7,200 and a single-storey exterior at $3,600 to $9,000, GST included. Preparation, height and surface condition move a quote most. See our Hobart painting cost guide for more detail.

What is the best time of year to paint in Hobart?

For exterior work, late summer and early autumn are usually the most reliable. Bureau of Meteorology averages for Hobart show February has the fewest rain days and October the most. Winter brings damp mornings and short sunshine hours. Interior painting can be done at any time of year. Read the full guide.

Could my older Hobart home have lead paint?

Quite possibly. The Australian Government's Lead Alert guide says homes built before 1970 are most at risk, and paint with up to 50 per cent lead was used on homes built before 1950. Lead is hazardous when sanded, scraped or burnt. Ask the painter how they will test for it and contain dust and chips.

What about asbestos?

The Asbestos Safety and Eradication Agency says homes built or renovated before 1990 can contain asbestos inside and outside. It must never be cleaned with high pressure water or compressed air. Power tools must not be used to sand it either. If eaves, cladding, fences or roofing might be fibre cement from that era, have it tested before preparation starts.

Do I need a permit to repaint a heritage home?

It depends on the listing. For council-listed places, repainting a previously painted exterior in a similar colour is exempt from a planning permit. Places on the Tasmanian Heritage Register need Heritage Council approval even for like-for-like repainting. New colour schemes or painting bare masonry can need a permit. See our heritage guide.

How do I find out if my home is heritage listed?

Ask your local council, which can tell you whether a property is locally listed or in a heritage precinct under the Tasmanian Planning Scheme. For the Tasmanian Heritage Register, contact Heritage Tasmania, which offers free advice from its heritage advisors on 1300 850 332. Check before you choose colours or book a painter.

What should I ask a painter before accepting a quote?

Ask for a written, itemised quote showing preparation, number of coats and the products to be used. Ask about their licence and insurance and check any licence on the CBOS register. Ask how long the job will take. Also ask how they manage lead paint, access equipment and weather delays.

Are the painters licensed and insured?

We do not check or vouch for any painter's licence or insurance, so please check yourself. Ask the painter for their licence details and a certificate of currency for their insurance before work starts. You can look up licence holders on the Tasmanian CBOS register of licensed occupations.

How long does it take to paint a house?

A typical one or two-storey house of up to four bedrooms takes three to four days on average, according to a national house painter cost guide (updated June 2025), and a large house can take up to two weeks. In Hobart, rain, dew and wind can add days to exterior work, so allow some slack.

How are my details used?

We use your details only to pass your request to a local painting business and to follow up on that request. We only add you to our tips email list if you tick that box, and you can unsubscribe at any time. Apart from that painter, only the service providers that run this website for us handle your details. Our privacy policy explains access and correction.

Can I ask for more than one quote?

Yes, and it is sensible for bigger jobs. You can get other quotes independently and compare them with the one from the painter you are matched with. Ask every painter to price the same scope so the quotes are comparable, and to list preparation separately from painting.

What if I am not happy with the painter's work?

Raise it with the painting business first, in writing, referring to your written quote or contract. Because we are a referral service and not a party to your agreement, we cannot resolve disputes about workmanship. Tasmania's consumer regulator, Consumer, Building and Occupational Services (CBOS), can advise on your options.
